Mumbai Police Gears Up for Cyber Warfare with Specialized Commandos

Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar stressed the urgent need to train police officials in investigating and preventing cyber crimes. He addressed a training workshop organized for Mumbai Police's Cyber Commandos, where trained personnel were introduced for cyber crime prevention and detection. Additionally, a poster for the helpline number 1930 was unveiled.

Rising Cyber Frauds and Sextortion Cases

Addressing the trained officials, Commissioner Phansalkar highlighted the surge in cyber frauds, sextortion, identity theft, phishing, and cheating cases in the past two years. He emphasized that such crimes result in both financial and reputational damage to victims.

Digital Literacy for Every Head Constable

Recognizing the growing threat of cyber crimes, Phansalkar emphasized the importance of digital literacy for every head constable working at a police station. He announced that the next phase of training will focus on station house officers and other policemen to enhance their cyber crime investigation skills.

Collaboration with SBI and Public Awareness

The Mumbai Police have collaborated with the State Bank of India (SBI), which has a vast customer base of 95 lakh in Mumbai. This partnership has enabled the police to reach a significant portion of the city's population. Phansalkar also highlighted the crucial role of public awareness in combating cyber crimes.

Success of Cyber Helpline 1930

Special Police Commissioner Deven Bharti shared the success of the cyber helpline 1930, which has facilitated the freezing of over Rs 25 crore in transactions that were attempted by online fraudsters. He encouraged police officials to continuously upgrade their investigative skills through training to effectively address the evolving nature of cyber crimes.

The Mumbai Police's proactive approach in training its personnel and collaborating with stakeholders demonstrates their commitment to combating cyber crimes. By enhancing digital literacy, expanding training programs, and raising public awareness, the Mumbai Police aim to safeguard citizens from the growing threats in the cyber space.
