The 6th line between Khar and Goregaon stations in Mumbai has been commissioned, adding more train services and improving punctuality.

The 6th line between Khar and Goregaon stations in Mumbai has been commissioned, a Western Railway official said on Monday. The 8.8-kilometer stretch was successfully completed on Sunday with a speed trial of 112 kilometers per hour being conducted on it.

Benefits of the 6th line

This project will enhance the line capacity of the Mumbai suburban section, ease congestion, improve punctuality, and help to add more train services. The 6th line project involved the acquisition of private land as well as government land from the BMC, while 27 new foot overbridges were constructed in lieu of existing FOBs that were infringing on the alignment.

Challenges faced during the construction

The final work on the line commenced on October 7 and was completed in a 30-day block period, during which several long-distance and suburban trains had to be canceled or short-terminated. Existing railway structures that were obstructing were dismantled and new structures were constructed to replace them. Apart from the construction of new flats for railway employees, around 607 Project Affected People (PAPs) were rehabilitated and provided with alternate accommodation. Some 1,000 trees were relocated and transplanted.

The commissioning of the 6th line between Khar and Goregaon stations is a significant achievement for the Western Railway. This project will benefit lakhs of commuters who travel on this route daily. It will also help to improve the overall efficiency of the Mumbai suburban railway network.
