Mumbai Election Turnout Drops to 52.2% Amid Challenges of Weather and Queues

Mumbai's voter turnout in the recent general elections saw a slight decrease compared to the 2019 figures, amidst complaints of delays and the challenging weather conditions. The city, known for its vibrant democracy and high-profile residents, recorded a 52.27 percent turnout this Monday, a drop from the 55.38 percent witnessed in the previous election.

Mumbais 52.2% Election Turnout

The six Lok Sabha constituencies in Mumbai showed varied participation rates, with Mumbai South, an area housing both industrial magnates and top government officials, registering the lowest at 47.7 percent. On the other hand, Mumbai North saw a relatively higher turnout of 55.21 percent. Other constituencies like Mumbai North Central, Mumbai North East, Mumbai North West, and Mumbai South Central reported turnouts of 51.42 percent, 53.75 percent, 53.67 percent, and 51.88 percent respectively.

Delays at polling stations were a significant concern among voters. Some individuals reported waiting in line for over an hour to cast their ballots. Uddhav Thackeray, Sena UBT chief, criticized the Election Commission (EC) during a press conference for what he perceived as deliberate slowdowns in the voting process. Priyanka Chaturvedi, a Sena UBT Rajya Sabha member, echoed these sentiments, suggesting that the provision of additional Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) could have alleviated some of these issues.

Complaints weren't limited to delays alone. Voters also expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of adequate facilities at polling booths, which, coupled with long queues and high temperatures reaching up to 35 degrees Celsius, tested their patience significantly.

The elections saw notable candidates from various parties contesting in Mumbai's constituencies. Union Minister Piyush Goyal (BJP) faced Bhushan Patil (Congress) in Mumbai North; Sanjay Dina Patil (Shiv Sena UBT) contested against Mihir Kotecha (BJP) in Mumbai North East; and Varsha Gaikwad (Congress) was up against Advocate Ujjwal Nikam (BJP) in Mumbai North Central.

Among the voters were prominent personalities from the industrial and entertainment sectors including Anil Ambani, Mukesh Ambani, Ratan Tata, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, and many others who made their way to polling stations across Maharashtra's capital to exercise their democratic right.

The overall voting percentage across the 13 constituencies in Maharashtra that participated in this final phase of state elections stood at 54.22 percent. This figure reflects the civic engagement and participation levels within the state amidst various challenges faced by voters on election day.
