Mumbai Braces For More Rains, IMD Issues ‘Yellow’ Alert For City Today

Heavy showers in Mumbai on Thursday led to waterlogging in various areas, causing traffic jams on major roads and disrupting the suburban train services of both Western and Central Railways.

The India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Mumbai center had issued a 'yellow' alert for Friday, predicting heavy rainfall in isolated places. On Thursday, it had issued a 'red' alert for Mumbai and the neighboring Raigad district, forecasting "heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places."

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said,''Heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai and its suburbs with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. Occasional gusty winds reaching 40-50 km/h are very likely.''

Between 8 am and 6 pm, the island city, eastern suburbs, and western suburbs experienced an average rainfall of 83.23 mm, 62.72 mm, and 95.01 mm, respectively.

Civic officials reported waterlogging in several areas at 3:30 pm, including Matunga, DN Nagar, Byculla, Trombay, Azad Maidan, Kandivali, Kalbadevi, Oshiwara, Dahisar, and Magathane, with water levels reaching almost half a foot in most of these locations.

The continuous heavy rains resulted in the overflowing of the Tansa and Vihar lakes, which are critical sources of drinking water for Mumbai, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Furthermore, a fresh landslide occurred on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near Kamshet tunnel on Thursday night, impacting vehicular movement. One of the three lanes towards Mumbai was closed for debris and mud removal. Earlier in the afternoon, there was a block on the Mumbai-bound arm of the road near Adoshi tunnel due to stones and boulders rolling down the hills. The traffic suspension lasted from 12 noon to 2 pm, after which vehicles were allowed to pass. Efforts were underway to clear the road and restore normalcy.
