The 91-year-old Jnanpith awardee had been battling heart failure and other health issues, including respiratory problems. His contributions to storytelling have left a lasting impact on both ordinary readers and intellectuals alike.

MT Vasudevan Nair, Iconic Malayalam Writer, Dies

Born in 1933 in Kudallur, Kerala, MT Vasudevan Nair, affectionately known as MT, was the youngest of four siblings. His father worked in Ceylon, while MT spent his formative years in Kudallur and Punnayurkulam. These early experiences significantly shaped his literary voice.

Literary Achievements and Awards

MT's literary journey began with his education at Malamakkavu Elementary School and Kumaranelloor High School. He graduated with a chemistry degree from Victoria College, Palakkad, in 1953. He initially worked as a teacher and gramasevakan before joining Mathrubhumi Weekly as a sub-editor in 1957.

Over seven decades, MT authored nine novels and 19 short story collections. His novel "Naalukettu" established him as a literary icon. Other notable works include "Asuravithu," "Manju," and "Kaalam," which won him the Jnanpith Award in 1995.

Cinematic Contributions

MT's influence extended to Malayalam cinema as well. He directed seven films and wrote screenplays for around 54 films. His cinematic masterpieces like "Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha" and "Kadavu" are celebrated for their compelling narratives.

He holds the record for winning the National Film Award for Best Screenplay four times. These accolades were for "Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha" (1989), "Kadavu" (1991), "Sadayam" (1992), and "Parinayam" (1994).

Personal Life

MT married writer Prameela in 1965, but they separated after 11 years. They have a daughter, Sithara, who resides in the United States. In 1977, he married Kalamandalam Saraswathy, a renowned dance artist. They have a daughter named Aswathy Nair, who is also a dancer.

His home on Kottaram Road in Kozhikode is named after his elder daughter Sithara. MT's life was marked by profound contributions to literature and cinema, leaving an indelible mark on both fields.
