MP demands salary hike amid serious debate in Parliament

Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agrawal said that their salary is less than what their secretaries get.

Amid clamour over a range of issues in Parliament, Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agrawal raised the issue of salary hike for Members of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Agrawal said that their salary is less than what their secretaries get.

It must be recalled that the issue of salary hike for Members of Parliament was raked even in November last year when the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament had made a recommendation to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

It was then reported that the PMO agreed to revise not only the Parliamentarians' salary but also their allowances.

The basic pay of MPs was supposed to be revised from Rs 50,000 to one lakh per month.

Judging by comparative standards, the remuneration of a member of Indian Parliament is not very high compared to what is paid to a member of the national legislature in countries like the US and the UK, said a report.

But, the what is to be noted here is that Parliamentarians are entitled major allowances and benefits that more or less compensate for their low basic pay.

    Other allowances

Some of the allowances are daily allowance which is Rs 2,000 per day for each day of residence on duty and a Constituency allowance of Rs 45,000 per month. Apart from these there are office expense allowance, travel allowance, subsidised meals, alowance for purchase of computers and medical allowance among others.
