Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Questions Congress Over Pakistan Minister's Comments on Article 370

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has demanded an explanation from the Congress following remarks by Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif. Asif claimed that Pakistan's government and the Congress-National Conference alliance in Jammu and Kashmir share a common stance on restoring Article 370. This article, which was revoked by the Narendra Modi government in August 2019, is a contentious issue amid the ongoing assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

MP CM Challenges Congress on Article 370 Remarks

Yadav criticised Asif's statements as "highly condemnable" and urged Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to clarify the party's position on this sensitive matter. He questioned whether Pakistan facilitated the alliance between Congress and the National Conference, demanding clarity from the Congress leadership. "Pakistan Defence Minister Asif is openly saying that on the issue of restoration of Articles 370 and 35A in J&K, Pakistan, the Congress and the National Conference have the same opinion. So did Pakistan get this alliance between Congress and NC done..? For this, the Congress national President should clarify his stand. This is highly condemnable," Yadav stated.

Article 370 and Political Implications

Article 370 previously granted special rights to Jammu and Kashmir, while Article 35A provided privileges to its permanent residents. The abrogation of these articles has been a significant political move by the Indian government. Yadav described Article 370 as a "blot" and expressed concern over Congress allegedly aligning with Pakistan's agenda. He criticised any attempts by Congress to collaborate with perceived adversaries for electoral gains, calling it shameful.

The senior BJP leader insisted that if Congress is indeed promoting Pakistan's interests, it is a regrettable situation. He urged Kharge to apologise for this incident and respond firmly to Pakistan. Yadav's comments reflect ongoing tensions surrounding Jammu and Kashmir's political landscape, especially during its first assembly elections since Article 370's abrogation.

Congress-National Conference Alliance

The Congress party has allied with Farooq Abdullah's National Conference for these elections. This partnership has drawn scrutiny due to Asif's remarks linking them with Pakistan's stance on Article 370. The political dynamics in Jammu and Kashmir remain complex, with various parties navigating alliances and public perceptions amid heightened electoral activity.

Asif's comments have added fuel to an already charged political environment in Jammu and Kashmir. The region is witnessing its first assembly polls since losing its special status five years ago. The outcome of these elections could significantly impact future governance and regional stability.

The situation underscores the intricate interplay between domestic politics and international relations concerning Jammu and Kashmir. Political leaders continue to debate the implications of restoring or maintaining changes made to its constitutional status.
