Motihari Assembly Election 2025: BJP’s Pramod Kumar vs RJD’s Dewa Gupta in High-Stakes East Champaran Battle

The Motihari Assembly seat in East Champaran is shaping up as one of the most watched contests in the 2025 Bihar elections. Two distinctly different contenders, BJP veteran Pramod Kumar and RJD's youthful face Dewa Gupta, are locked in a direct fight that reflects the larger NDA versus Mahagathbandhan rivalry across the state.

Pramod Kumar: The Experienced Incumbent

A four-term legislator and one of the most prominent BJP figures in East Champaran, Pramod Kumar has represented the Motihari seat since 2005. He has also served as a minister in the Bihar government. Known for his quiet efficiency and close ties with senior party leaders, Kumar commands strong support among upper-caste and business communities in the region.

At 63, he remains one of the party's senior-most faces in North Bihar. His declared assets are worth ₹6.67 crore, and his liabilities stand at ₹26.6 lakh. Despite two old pending criminal cases, including one under IPC Section 153A (promoting enmity) and another related to theft and rioting, his public image remains largely clean.

Kumar's supporters point to his accessibility and experience as key reasons behind his repeated victories. His political base, strengthened by BJP's organizational network, remains his biggest asset.

Dewa Gupta: The RJD's Aggressive Challenger

The RJD has fielded Dewa Gupta, a 35-year-old businessman and social worker, as its challenger in Motihari. Gupta represents the younger, more assertive generation of RJD leaders who combine financial clout with local popularity. His name resonates particularly among youth and OBC voters, who view him as a challenger to BJP's long dominance in the region.

However, Gupta's profile comes with serious controversy. His affidavit lists 28 criminal cases, including charges of attempt to murder (IPC 307), extortion (IPC 386 and 387), and murder (IPC 302). Although he has not been convicted in any, the extensive criminal record could become a campaign issue.

Financially, Gupta is one of the wealthiest candidates in East Champaran, declaring total assets worth ₹7.9 crore and liabilities of ₹2.28 crore. He earns from business ventures, director salaries, and social initiatives. His supporters describe him as "young, resourceful and fearless," while critics label him as a symbol of money and muscle power in politics.

Caste and Voter Arithmetic

Motihari's political dynamics rest heavily on its caste composition. The constituency includes a significant population of Bhumihars, Yadavs, Vaishyas and Muslims. Traditionally, upper-caste and trading groups have supported the BJP, while the RJD draws strength from Yadavs, EBCs and minority voters.

In 2020, Pramod Kumar comfortably retained the seat riding on the popularity of the Modi government and NDA unity. However, the RJD is counting on anti-incumbency, youth discontent and renewed enthusiasm under Tejashwi Yadav to close the gap this time.

Who Has the Edge

Political analysts believe Pramod Kumar starts with a clear advantage because of his long incumbency, administrative experience and loyal voter base. His record as an MLA and the BJP's booth-level strength provide him a solid foundation.

Dewa Gupta, on the other hand, brings energy, wealth and a strong caste backing that could energize RJD's campaign in northern Bihar. His challenge will be to overcome questions about his criminal background and convince swing voters that he represents credible change.

The Motihari battle captures the essence of Bihar's evolving politics. On one side stands a seasoned BJP leader defending his record of service and stability. On the other stands a young RJD aspirant projecting himself as the voice of new energy and assertiveness.
