Mother Stripped, Son Killed For Refusing To Withdraw Sexual Harassment Complaint In MP

A Dalit mother was stripped and her son was killed after they refused to withdraw a sexual harassment complaint. The incident occurred on Thursday in Barodia Naunagir village of Sagar district in Madhya Pradesh.

The cops have arrested nine people in connection with the case, according to a report in Hindustan Times.

As per the report, the victim's family had filed a complaint against one Vikram Singh for harassing the Dalit man's sister in 2019. They have been harassed and pressured to withdraw the complaint.

"Vikram Singh was booked for sexually harassing the victim's sister in 2019, and has since been pressuring them to withdraw the case. On Thursday, Singh had an altercation with the victim at his home, which soon escalated. The prime accused later called his family members who joined him in assaulting the victim and his mother," the daily quoted additional superintendent of police (Sagar), Lokesh Sinha, as saying.

"The accused also stripped the victim's mother," said Nitin Pal, in charge of the Khurai police station. The 20-year-old Dalit boy was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead while his mother is undergoing treatment.

According to Bundelkhand Medical College superintendent RC Pandey, the woman has suffered a fracture in one of his hands and minor injuries. However, her condition is stable.

Acting on the complaint filed by the victim's family, the police have registered cases against all nine suspects under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 302 (murder), 353 (sexual harassment), and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt). Additionally, charges have been filed under the provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

On the other hand, the Dalit boy's family had refused to cremate hid body, demanding strict action against the accused and for the demolition of their properties. However, the final rites were performed after Sagar district collector Deepak Arya's intervention.
