Monkeypox Lockdown: Will There Be Another Lockdown Imposed Again Due To Mpox?

As global health authorities closely monitor the rising incidence of Monkeypox, now officially known as Mpox, concerns are mounting about the possibility of another worldwide lockdown. The rapid spread of the disease across African nations has sparked discussions about whether we might see a repeat of the COVID-19 scenario. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently renamed the disease to Mpox to align with its global health guidelines.

Dr. Hans Kluge, a WHO expert, has issued strong warnings about the current Mpox outbreak. The variant has raised significant concerns due to its high mortality rate of 10-11%. However, Dr. Kluge reassured that despite the severity of this strain, the global community has the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively control the spread of Mpox. He also confirmed that there are currently no plans to implement a lockdown due to Mpox.

Mpox, which has recently emerged as a major global health concern, was first identified in London in 2022. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the disease has been linked to 450 deaths, highlighting its potential danger. Due to its rapid spread beyond Congo and the severe impact on those infected, the WHO has officially declared Mpox a global health emergency.

The symptoms of Mpox usually appear 3 to 17 days after infection and include fever, skin rashes, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue. The disease poses a particular threat to individuals with pre-existing health conditions or those who have been in close contact with infected persons.

When asked if the new variant of monkeypox could lead to another global lockdown, Dr. Kluge indicated that such a scenario is unlikely. While there have been some cases in Europe following the outbreak in Africa, concerns remain high. However, Dr. Kluge expressed confidence that with collective efforts, the spread of Mpox can be halted.
