Mohan Kumar is India new Defence Secretary
Bengaluru, May 22: G Mohan Kumar has been appointed as India's new Defence Secretary today. He replaces R K Mathur, who is set to retire on May 24.
Mohan Kumar is currently the Secretary in Department of Defence Production. He has been given a two-year term.
The
government
also
appointed
Ashok
Kumar
Gupta
as
the
successor
to
Mohan
Kumar.
Born
in
1955
in
Kerala,
Mohan
Kumar
is
an
IAS
officer
from
the
1979
batch
Odisha
cadre.
Mohan
Kumar's
elevation
was
announced
by
the
Appointments
Committee
of
the
Cabinet
(ACC).
Appointed
as
the
Secretary
(Defence
Production)
on
September
1
last
year,
Mohan
Kumar
has
been
credited
with
a
series
of
initiatives
for
transparent
and
fast-paced
systems
in
the
Ministry
of
Defence.
Set to turn on turn 60 years on May 27, Mohan Kumar's elevation has been on the expected lines considering the role he is playing currently to propel the Make in India vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
At Aero India 2015, Mohan Kumar had told OneIndia that he was keen to see the DPSUs get on to the next gear to aid the armed forces.
During his recent visit to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Mohan Kumar undertook the review of all major programmes of the Company. According to sources in HAL, Mohan Kumar was keen to see Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) of Light Combat Helicopter (LCH).
A Post-Graduate in Chemistry, Mohan Kumar also holds a MBA from UK.
