In fact, this is for the first time the BJP has officially supported any candidate from the AIADMK.
Experts say it a "big" political development, especially at a time when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa is in hospital.
As the opposition DMK is mounting pressure on AIADMK to reveal details about the exact nature of Amma's health conditions, Modi government's support comes as a huge relief for the ruling party in Tamil Nadu.
