CPI(ML) Liberation Accuses Modi Government of Ignoring Ladakh's Statehood Demands

The CPI(ML) Liberation has stated that the Modi government is responsible for the unrest in Ladakh, highlighting ignored statehood demands and the suppression of democratic rights.

The Communist Party of India Marxist-Leninist Liberation has blamed the Modi government for the unrest in Ladakh, where protests for statehood have turned violent. The party stated that the government's disregard for democratic aspirations in Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir has led to this situation. They accused the government of undermining the Constitution and federalism to tighten control over the region.

In 2019, the Modi administration revoked Article 370, splitting Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. This move has been met with continuous demands for statehood from both regions. The Left party highlighted that these demands have been ignored by the BJP-led government, which has failed to address the people's democratic desires.

Protests and Demands in Ladakh

Mass protests in Ladakh, involving thousands, reflect growing frustration over years of rights suppression. Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, fasting at Leh's NDS Ground for 15 days, urges the government to heed Ladakh's people. The deteriorating health of fellow activists underscores the urgency of their demands.

Protesters in Ladakh are not only seeking statehood but also special constitutional provisions under the Sixth Schedule. These provisions aim to protect tribal interests, empower local governance through Autonomous District Councils, and safeguard the fragile ecological environment. The CPIML Liberation emphasized these demands as crucial for Ladakh's future.

Violence and Clashes in Leh

In Leh, clashes during a shutdown called by the Leh Apex Body resulted in four deaths and over 45 injuries, including 22 policemen. Protesters set fire to a BJP office, a police vehicle, and several other cars. This violence highlights the intensity of the agitation for statehood that has persisted for five years.

The reduction of Jammu and Kashmir from a state to a Union Territory marked a first in India. This change stripped residents of their right to participate in decision-making processes. The CPIML Liberation expressed concern over potential corporate exploitation of land and resources in Ladakh, similar to other hilly regions.

Call for Government Action

The CPIML Liberation urged the government to respect Ladakh's democratic aspirations by engaging with its people. They called for immediate action to grant statehood and include Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Addressing these issues is seen as vital to resolving ongoing tensions.
