Modi Govt 3.0 Welcomes 33 Newcomers, Including Political Scions

In a significant reshuffling and expansion of the Indian Cabinet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Sunday, introduced thirty-three new faces to his team, marking their first entry into the Union Council of Ministers. This move not only infuses fresh blood into the third Modi government but also brings to the fore scions from influential political families and former chief ministers, underscoring a blend of youth and experience.

New Faces in Modis Cabinet

Among the notable entrants are three former chief ministers: Shivraj Singh Chouhan from Madhya Pradesh, Manohar Lal Khattar from Haryana, and HD Kumaraswamy from Karnataka. Chouhan, a veteran in politics with five terms as MP from Vidisha, has the distinction of being the longest-serving chief minister of Madhya Pradesh. Khattar, with his roots in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has led Haryana twice as its chief minister before resigning in March following political shifts within the state. Kumaraswamy, representing the Janata Dal (Secular), adds to this list with his extensive political lineage and experience in Karnataka's state governance.

The inclusion of allies in the Modi cabinet has been noteworthy with seven first-time ministers from partner parties. These include K Rammohan Naidu and Chandrasekhar Pemmasani from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP); Lalan Singh and Ram Nath Thakur from the Janata Dal (United) or JD(U); Jayant Chaudhary from the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD); Chirag Paswan from the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP); and HD Kumaraswamy from the Janata Dal (Secular) or JDS.

Jayant Chaudhary, at 45 years old and serving as the national chairman of RLD, brings a rich political heritage as the grandson of India’s fifth prime minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh. His recent alliance with the NDA ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections signifies a strategic move after his grandfather was posthumously honoured with the Bharat Ratna. Under his leadership, RLD secured significant victories in western Uttar Pradesh.

Chirag Paswan, stepping into his father Ram Vilas Paswan's shoes, marks his entry into central governance after winning the Hajipur seat by a substantial margin. His party's impressive performance in Bihar is a testament to his leadership and popularity.

Ram Nath Thakur brings to the cabinet his deep connections within Bihar's political landscape as the son of Karpoori Thakur, a celebrated socialist leader. His extensive experience in state governance and close ties with Nitish Kumar are expected to enrich his tenure as a Union minister.

New entrants also include Ravneet Singh Bittu from Punjab, Raksha Khadse from Maharashtra, and Jitin Prasada who returns to central politics after a decade. Prasada’s shift from Congress to BJP in 2021 marked a significant political transition reflective of changing allegiances within Indian politics.

The Cabinet expansion also highlights Modi's strategy of rewarding BJP's allies within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), ensuring a balanced representation that underscores both continuity and experience. Senior BJP leaders such as Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman, and S Jaishankar were also sworn in at Rashtrapati Bhavan, maintaining core leadership within Modi 2.0 Cabinet.

This reshuffle not only signifies an attempt to strengthen governance ahead of future electoral challenges but also reflects Modi’s vision for an inclusive government that represents diverse political backgrounds and regional aspirations. With this mix of seasoned politicians and new entrants from allied parties, the Modi government aims to address both administrative challenges and electoral dynamics in its third term.
