Modi Accuses Odisha Govt of Being Run by Unelected 'Super CM'

In a significant political move ahead of the elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi targeted the governance of Odisha under Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, highlighting the concept of 'Odisha Ashmita' (pride of Odisha) as a central theme. During his campaign across Kandhamal, Bolangir, and Bargarh Lok Sabha seats, Modi launched a veiled critique against Patnaik's administration, particularly pointing out the influence of V K Pandian, referred to as the 'Super CM', on the state's governance.

Modi Targets Odisha Govt Leadership

Modi questioned the Chief Minister's familiarity with his own state, suggesting Patnaik could not name all 30 districts and their headquarters without assistance. This assertion was part of Modi's broader accusation that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is committed to safeguarding Odisha's dignity against what he perceives as neglect by the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government. The Prime Minister accused the BJD of entrusting the state's leadership to an unelected individual who lacks a deep understanding of Odisha's cultural heritage.

Despite Odisha's potential for growth, Modi argued that 25 years under BJD rule have seen little development and poverty alleviation. He highlighted widespread dissatisfaction among Odisha's populace towards the BJD leadership and pointed out the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, including incidents of violence against ministers.

Modi contrasted his connection with Odisha's aspirations to Patnaik's perceived detachment, promising transformative leadership that would leverage the state's mineral wealth to achieve unparalleled progress. He invoked the spiritual significance of Lord Jagannath to the people of Odisha, raising concerns over the missing keys to the Shri Ratna Bhandar in Shri Jagannath Temple and questioning the state government's transparency regarding this issue.

The Prime Minister made a strong appeal for a BJP government in Odisha, emphasizing that a vote for BJP would contribute towards a 'double-engine' government capable of propelling Odisha to new heights. He announced that on June 10, a BJP Chief Minister would be sworn in, promising leadership that is intimately familiar with and respectful of Odishan traditions.

Modi criticized the current administration for its failure to address public grievances and maintain cultural integrity. He underscored his commitment to promoting Odisha Ashmita on national and international platforms, citing examples such as showcasing Konark Surya Mandir at the G-20 conference in Delhi and sanctioning projects like the Paika Sangram Memorial to honor Odia valor. The issuance of a coin and postage stamp commemorating Paika Sangram was also highlighted as evidence of BJP's dedication to celebrating Odisha's heritage.

In his concluding remarks, Modi sought dual blessings for BJP candidates in both MLA and MP contests within Odisha, aiming for a comprehensive victory that aligns with BJP’s broader mission at the Centre. This strategic emphasis on Odisha Ashmita not only reflects Modi’s electoral strategy but also underscores a deep-seated political narrative aimed at redefining governance and cultural pride in Odisha.
