Two BJP workers were attacked by a mob on Sunday evening in Mangaluru as Narendra Modi took oath as the Prime Minister of India for the third term in a row.

The injured victims were rushed to a hospital in Deralakatte. One is reportedly in stable condition, while the other is undergoing surgery.

The altercation occurred during a victory procession organized by the Bollar BJP gram samiti to celebrate Narendra Modi's swearing-in as Prime Minister and the Lok Sabha election victory of Capt Brijesh Chowta. The procession, from Chelur to Dharmanagara via Boliyar, turned sour when three BJP followers allegedly shouted provocative slogans in front of the Boliyar mosque, attracting a group of 20-25 Muslim youths on motorcycles.

Following the BJP followers to a bar about two kilometers away, a confrontation ensued, resulting in the stabbing of two BJP supporters. The victims, identified as Harish (41) and Nandakumar (24), are from Innoli. Another supporter, Krishna Kumar, was beaten and has lodged a complaint.

Meanwhile, the Konaje police are investigating the incident and the security has been beefed up in the region to avoid untoward incidents.

The Dakshina Kannada district is a sensitive area where incidents of communal violence are frequently reported.
