Maharashtra Assembly Elections: MNS and Ambedkar's VBA Struggle Amid Mahayuti's Victory
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) led by Raj Thackeray and Prakash Ambedkar's Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) did not make a significant impact in the recent state assembly elections. The ruling Mahayuti coalition achieved a decisive victory. Meanwhile, parties like the Samajwadi Party and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) fared slightly better in comparison.

Minor Parties' Performance
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) fielded 237 candidates, the highest among all parties, yet failed to secure any seats. Similarly, the Azad Samaj Party Kanshi Ram contested 28 seats without success. The MNS and VBA also struggled, with 125 and 200 candidates respectively, but neither party managed to win a seat. On the eve of vote counting, Ambedkar had expressed confidence in his party's prospects, predicting they would gain enough seats to influence government formation.
Challenges for Smaller Parties
The Swabhimani Paksha, led by Raju Shetti, fielded 19 candidates but did not win any seats. This party is known for its influence among farmers in western Maharashtra. Similarly, Bachchu Kadu's Prahar Janshakti Party contested 38 seats but also failed to secure any victories. Amit Thackeray, son of the MNS chief, faced disappointment as he trailed in third place in Mumbai's Mahim constituency.
Overall Election Landscape
In contrast, the Samajwadi Party and Jan Surajya Shakti each won two seats. Other parties like the CPM, AIMIM, Rashtriya Yuva Swabhiman Party, Rashtriya Samaj Paksh, Peasants and Workers Party, and Rajashri Shahu Vikas Aghadi managed to win one seat each. In total, 158 parties participated in the assembly elections held on November 20.
The primary contest was between two major alliances: the Mahayuti and Maha Vikas Aghadi. The Mahayuti included BJP, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction, and Ajit Pawar-led NCP. Meanwhile, the Maha Vikas Aghadi comprised Congress, NCP SP, and Shiv Sena UBT.
Despite efforts from various smaller parties to make their mark in these elections, their impact remained limited. The results highlighted the dominance of larger coalitions in shaping Maharashtra's political landscape.
