Mehbooba Mufti Calls for BJP Leader's Arrest Over Threats to Pahari Muslims

In a recent development that has stirred the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has called for stringent action against a BJP leader accused of making threats towards Pahari Muslims in the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat. The controversy erupted following allegations of hate speech and the use of unparliamentary language by Satish Bhargav, a now-expelled BJP spokesperson from Poonch district, during an election meeting.

Mufti Demands Action Against BJP Leader

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lodged a formal complaint against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of employing intimidation tactics to sway voters in favor of the Apni Party candidate. Mufti, addressing reporters, argued that Bhargav should face charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and be incarcerated in Delhi's Tihar Jail, highlighting what she perceives as a double standard in the enforcement of law based on political affiliation.

This incident has cast a shadow over the electoral process in the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency, where elections were postponed to May 25 by the Election Commission. The constituency is witnessing a keen contest between PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and National Conference leader Mian Altaf, with 19 other candidates also vying for the seat. Among these candidates are Mohammad Saleem Parray of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) and J&K Apni Party leader Zafar Iqbal Khan Manhas.

The BJP's decision to expel Bhargav reflects the party's stance on maintaining decorum and ensuring that election campaigns are free from hate speech and unparliamentary behavior. This episode underscores the heightened sensitivities and complexities involved in electoral politics in Jammu and Kashmir, a region with a diverse demographic fabric and a history of political volatility.

The allegations and subsequent actions taken by both the PDP and BJP highlight the challenges faced in safeguarding democratic processes and ensuring fair electoral practices. As the constituency prepares for the upcoming elections, all eyes will be on how these developments impact voter sentiment and the overall integrity of the electoral process.
