Vandalism at North Eastern Hill University VC's Residence During Student Protests for Resignation

On Sunday, the residence of North Eastern Hill University's vice chancellor, Prof. PS Shukla, was vandalised by unknown individuals. This incident occurred amid ongoing student protests demanding the removal of the vice chancellor and two other university officials, according to police reports.

Following the vandalism, several officials and police personnel, led by SP City D Ashwaghosh, arrived at the scene. Acting Registrar B Rynjah subsequently filed an FIR at Mawlai police station, and a case has been registered, an officer confirmed.

Student Protests and March

Students from the oldest university in the North East region organised a march passing by the vice chancellor's official residence. However, they were halted by police intervention. The protest is part of a larger movement demanding immediate action against Prof. Shukla.

Research Scholars Forum NEHU president Superior Syngkli stated that the vice chancellor has been missing since late November 9. Syngkli expressed support for the students' demands for Prof. Shukla's resignation.

Community Support and Hunger Strike

Earlier, a diverse group of people, including students from NEHU and other educational institutions, women, and NGOs from the state, participated in a march to show solidarity with the protesting students at NEHU Shillong campus. The march began with a prayer meeting at NEHU's Science Cluster and concluded at the Administrative Block.

At the Administrative Block, students have been on an indefinite hunger strike for five days. This action underscores their determination to see their demands met by university authorities.
