Meet Raman Rajamannan, The Tribal 'King' From Kerala, Invited For Republic Day 2025 Celebrations

Raman Rajamannan, the 'king' of Kerala's Mannan community, was invited to attend the 76th Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi on January 26, 2025. He was accompanied by his wife Binumol. The special invite marks first ever attendance of a tribal king at the Republic Day parade in New Delhi. The invitation was handed over by OR Kelu, Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes.

Rajamannan and his wife travelled to Delhi on Wednesday and plan to explore various locations after the parade. They are scheduled to return on February 2. The Scheduled Caste Development Department will cover their travel expenses, as shared by Minister Kelu on social media.

Traditional Attire and Support

For this significant occasion, Rajamannan will don traditional attire, including headgear known as thalappavu. He will be supported by two Ministers and soldiers during the events. This ceremonial dress highlights the cultural importance of his presence at the celebration.

The Mannan community is a tribal clan residing in 48 settlements within Kerala's Idukki district. Rajamannan leads approximately 300 families within this community. Despite his royal title, he lives modestly as a farmer without a palace or chariot, residing instead in a simple house while managing a local temple with his family.

Community Leadership

Although Rajamannan holds no civil rights or duties, he plays a vital role in overseeing community matters. He is assisted by four deputies known as upa rajas, one prince called ilayaraja, and a council of ministers comprising 50 members referred to as kaanis.

The Mannan community follows a matrilineal system where inheritance rights are held by women. This unique cultural practice distinguishes them from many other communities in India.

Raman Rajamannan became king in 2012 following Aryan Rajamannan's passing. An economics graduate, he continues to lead his people while maintaining an ordinary lifestyle focused on farming and community service.
