Meerut To Get ₹406 Crore Drone Runway Facility For Security, Surveillance And Rescue Operations

India is set to build its first dedicated unmanned aircraft and drone runway in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, marking a major step in defence technology and aerial surveillance capability. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has issued a tender for the project, which is estimated to cost about ₹406 crore.

Spread across nearly 900 acres, the facility will play a key role in defence operations, monitoring, drone testing and training, and is expected to strengthen both national security and disaster response capacity.

Strategic Project After "Operation Sindoor"

After the success of "Operation Sindoor", the Government of India has begun preparations to develop the country's first specialised runway exclusively for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drones in Meerut. The project is considered highly significant from both strategic and military perspectives, as it will enhance border monitoring, security arrangements and aerial vigilance.

According to the tender notice issued by the BRO Chief Engineer, the construction of the drone runway is expected to cost approximately ₹406 crore. About 900 acres of land have been earmarked for the project, and officials estimate that completion may take around 85 months, or nearly seven years. Authorities believe the facility will bring a major upgrade to India's defence preparedness once operational.

Why Meerut Was Chosen

Meerut has been selected due to its geographical and strategic advantages. Located in western Uttar Pradesh, the city provides easier monitoring access to sensitive and border-linked regions. The area is also considered suitable for military movement and logistical support.

Experts note that the role of drones and unmanned aircraft in modern warfare is steadily increasing. Therefore, a dedicated runway has been planned keeping future defence requirements in mind and to support evolving aerial surveillance systems.

Facility To Function As A Training Hub

Until now, drone operations in India have largely relied on conventional airstrips or temporary grounds. For the first time, a modern runway specially designed only for drones and remotely piloted aircraft will be constructed. This will allow safe testing and operation of larger and technologically advanced drones.

The location is also expected to emerge as a major training centre for drone pilots and technical specialists, helping create a skilled workforce in unmanned aviation technology.

Wider Civilian And Disaster Management Benefits

The runway will not be limited to military use. It will also support disaster management operations, surveillance, relief and rescue work, and delivery of essential supplies to remote areas. During natural disasters, it can significantly improve response time and coordination.

According to the BRO, runway 14/32 will have a total length of 2,110 metres and a width of 45 metres. It is being designed to allow operations of remotely piloted aircraft along with transport aircraft such as the C-295 and C-130.

Experts believe the project will not only strengthen India's defence technology capabilities but also boost the domestic drone industry and give Meerut a new national-level identity.
