Meerut–Prayagraj Ganga Expressway Set To Open: Check Route Map, Toll Rates, Travel Time And Property Boom

Uttar Pradesh's longest access-controlled highway, the 594-km Ganga Expressway, is approaching its formal inauguration after completion of construction. The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) has indicated the ceremony is expected between March 25 and 31, and the state government is preparing to approach the Prime Minister's Office to invite Narendra Modi to inaugurate the project.

The foundation stone for the mega corridor was laid in December 2021 and the project, built at a cost of over ₹36,200 crore, is being counted among the most ambitious infrastructure initiatives undertaken in the state. Officials say successful trial runs and toll system testing have already taken place, with full traffic movement and toll collection targeted from April 1, 2026, coinciding with the start of the 2026-27 financial year.

Route map and districts on the corridor

Beginning near Bijauli village in Meerut and terminating at Judapur Dandu village in Prayagraj, the expressway will provide a direct high-speed link between western and eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The corridor passes through 12 districts:
Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj.

Once operational, the project is expected to cut travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj from roughly 12 hours to about six to seven hours, substantially improving passenger and freight connectivity across the state.

Expected toll charges and operations

While official toll rates are yet to be notified, preliminary estimates suggest:

• Cars: about ₹2.55 per km, roughly ₹1,515 for a full one-way trip
• Small commercial vehicles: about ₹2,405
• Buses and trucks: around ₹4,840

Authorities plan to begin toll operations immediately after opening the highway to regular traffic in early April.

Unique airstrip for fighter jets

A major highlight of the project is a 3.5-km-long emergency airstrip in Shahjahanpur designed for Indian Air Force operations. During testing last year, several aircraft including Rafale, SU-30 MKI, Mirage-2000, MiG-29, Jaguar, C-130J Super Hercules, AN-32 and the MI-17 V5 helicopter carried out "land and go" exercises.

The stretch can handle both daytime and nighttime fighter jet landings, making it the first expressway airstrip in India with this capability. Previous emergency landing exercises on the Lucknow-Agra and Purvanchal expressways were limited to daytime operations.

Real estate and industrial growth expected

The project is already influencing property markets along its alignment. Real estate experts say land prices within 10-15 km of the expressway have risen by 40% to 60% over the past two years.

Improved connectivity is expanding logistics opportunities and attracting investors to smaller towns that were previously overlooked. The Uttar Pradesh government also plans to develop feeder roads and industrial corridors, especially in districts such as Amroha, Badaun and Hardoi, which could further accelerate regional economic activity.

With faster travel, logistics efficiency and defence utility combined, the Ganga Expressway is expected to reshape transport and development patterns across large parts of Uttar Pradesh soon after its opening.
