Meerut Police Ban Eid Namaz On City Roads; Violators To Face Passport, Driver's License Cancellation
The Uttar Pradesh police have adopted a firm stance on congregational namaz during Eid-ul-Fitr. Meerut Police have explicitly stated that offering namaz on city roads will not be allowed this year.
Anyone caught praying on the streets will face the registration of an FIR, alongside the potential cancellation of their passport and driving licence, reported India Today.

Meerut SP City Ayush Vikram explained that appeals have been issued to religious leaders and imams, encouraging people to pray solely within mosques. He cautioned that any breach of this order would lead to severe legal consequences.
Last year, similar breaches resulted in cases being lodged against 200 individuals, with more than 80 identified. This time around, the police are keeping a sharp eye on potential violators.
To enforce the rules, sensitive locations will be monitored using drones and CCTV cameras. Social media will also be closely watched, with tough measures promised against those spreading rumours.
Police officials have warned that rule-breakers could see their passports and driving licences cancelled. Furthermore, obtaining a new passport will require a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the court.
SP City Ayush Vikram noted that last year, some people flouted the regulations during Eid, prompting legal action. The administration is now on high alert and will not hesitate to act against lawbreakers, he added. Additional security personnel will be stationed in all sensitive areas to maintain order.
In response, Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary voiced his disapproval on social media. In a tweet, he wrote, "Policing towards Orwellian 1984!" Elaborating on his post, the minister remarked, "I believe the police should not threaten to seize passports. The administration can ensure roads remain clear, but they ought to hold sensitive discussions with the community to secure cooperation."
