MEA Internship Program: Everything You Need To Know About Term 1, Eligibility, Stipend, And More

In today's competitive world, internships play a vital role in shaping your career. They act as a bridge, helping you transition from academic life to the professional sphere. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) offers a fantastic opportunity for young graduates to gain valuable experience through its Internship Program, available twice a year, according to a Hindustan Times report.

Internship Schedule And Terms

MEA Internship Program

The MEA Internship Program is conducted in two terms: from April to September (Term I) and from October to March (Term II). Each term accommodates 30 interns, who are selected based on a thorough selection process. Interns can engage in the program for a period ranging from one to three months, depending on their availability and the work assigned.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for this prestigious internship, candidates must meet the following criteria:

1. Be Indian citizens
2. Hold at least a graduation degree from a recognised university or be in their final year of undergraduate study where the internship is mandatory
3. Be aged 25 or younger as of 31 December in the internship year

Term 1 Scheme and Selection Process

For Term I, the selection process follows a "quota cum weightage" system, considering candidates from 14 states and 4 Union Territories, including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi, among others. Applicants will be evaluated based on their academic performance in high school and university, with priority given to candidates from TADP districts and those from SC/ST/OBC/EWS categories.

The selection process consists of two stages:

  1. Preliminary Screening: A merit list is created based on academic performance.
  2. Personal Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed via video conference. Up to 30 candidates will be selected, and if any candidate opts out, the next candidate on the merit list will be offered the opportunity.

Stipend And Benefits

Each intern will receive a monthly honorarium of ₹10,000 to cover basic expenses. The Ministry will also provide a one-time air travel allowance for travel from the intern's home state or university to Delhi, subject to a ceiling based on economy class fares.

What The Internship Offers

The MEA Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to gain an understanding of how India formulates and implements its foreign policy. Interns will work closely with the head of division (HOD) on specific tasks, which may include research, writing reports, analyzing developments, or other tasks assigned by the HOD. At the end of the internship, each intern must submit a detailed report on the work they have undertaken.

This program offers invaluable insights into the workings of the government and the chance to contribute to India's foreign relations.
