New Delhi, Aug 12: The Supreme Court of India which stayed the cancellation of the anticipatory bail plea filed by former Union Telecom Minister, Dayanidhi Maran made several stinging remarks.

Justice Tirath S Thakur who headed the Bench which heard the plea filed by Maran sought to know from the CBI why no arrest was carried out since 2013, the year the FIR was lodged in this case.

The CBI had filed a case against Maran and others in connection with the illegal telephone exchange scam. The Madras High Court had two days back directed Maran to surrender before the CBI while cancelling his anticipatory bail.

Why were no arrests made since 2013?

The Supreme Court sought to know why no arrests were made in the case despite the FIR being registered in the year 2013. Are you trying to fix him, the Supreme Court sought to know from the CBI.

Why do you need to arrest a man for a Rs 1 crore pending phone bill? Why didn't you make any arrest for three years, the court also asked the CBI. [SC restricts CBI from arresting Dayanidhi Maran in illegal telephone exchange case]

The court observed that in the NHRM scam worth Rs 800 crore not a single arrest has been made. In this (Maran's) case you want to arrest him for a Rs 1 crore phone bill.

Are you trying to fix him? If the issue is with regard to the phone bills, then question the BSNL officials and also him(Maran). What is the need to arrest him, the Supreme Court also sought to know.

Raise the bill now and he will pay:

The Supreme Court said that if the bill of Rs 1 crore is raised now, he will pay. Is it a matter of prestige for you? He says he is willing to pay and on the other hand you (CBI) say that no bills were raised.

When the Attorney General appearing for the CBI said that they wanted to prove the criminal conspiracy, the Supreme Court asked, why should anticipatory bail not be allowed in economic offences.[SC stays cancellation of Maran's anticipatory bail]

People are overstaying in official bungalows. Can you call that corruption, the Supreme Court also asked when granting the CBI two weeks time to file its objections.
