Sonitpur (Assam), Jan 30: Ten people were killed on Wednesday and 12 were injured after a land dispute broke out in Sonitpur. Following the dispute, locals blocked the National Highway 52 that connects Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

Members of the CPI-ML too joined the blockade and alleged that those killed in Wednesday's land encroachment dispute were members of their party.

Security was immediately beefed up following the incident.

Police officials acknowledged the fact that due to the Assam- Arunachal Pradesh encroachment issues, there was tension brewing between villagers in the two states.

Those killed, police says, belonged to a vigilante group that was set up to protect the Assamese territory from being taken over by people in Arunchal Pradesh.
