Assam Leaders Reflect on Manmohan Singh's Humility and Public Service Legacy

Political figures in Assam expressed their sorrow over the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Known for his humility and significant contributions to India's development, Singh passed away at AIIMS Delhi at the age of 92. Leaders from various parties highlighted his role in economic reforms and his dedication to public service.

Manmohan Singh Remembered for Humility

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya described Singh's death as deeply saddening. He praised Singh's gentleness and decency, noting his efforts in strengthening India's global economic presence. "May God grant peace and salvation to the departed soul," Acharya stated.

Economic Reforms and Legacy

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who worked with Singh during his tenure as a Congress minister, shared his personal experiences. Sarma recalled meeting Singh in 1991 when he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam, a position he held for 28 years. "Dr Sahab embodied humility and never surrendered to the trappings of power," Sarma mentioned on X.

Sarma also highlighted Singh's pivotal role in transitioning India to a free market economy. He noted that Singh's leadership ended decades of restrictive socialist policies. "In his demise, the nation has lost a great patriot, an exceptional scholar, an unconventional politician and a fine statesman," Sarma added.

Tributes from Political Leaders

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal emphasised Singh's humility and scholarship. He acknowledged Singh's key role in India's economic resurgence during challenging times. Sonowal remarked, "His passing away leaves a void in our political sphere." He extended condolences to Singh's family and well-wishers.

The Assam Congress described Singh as a visionary leader and renowned economist. They praised his integrity, humility, and dedication to public service, stating these qualities inspire many. "India has lost one of its finest sons," they expressed on X.

Impact on Indian Economy

The BJP's Assam unit recognised Singh's efforts in transforming India's economy. They credited him with abolishing the license rule as Finance Minister, which helped reduce corruption and slow economic growth. His liberalisation policies were seen as a boost to the Indian economy.

Akhil Gogoi, Raijor Dal President and Assam MLA, also paid tribute to Singh's contributions to the nation. The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) expressed their grief over what they termed an irreparable loss for the country.

AAP's Assam unit chief Manoj Dhanowar acknowledged Singh's leadership in economic reforms and liberalisation. He noted that these policies provided new momentum to India's economy.

Singh will be remembered for his significant impact on India's development and his exemplary public service. His legacy continues to inspire leaders across political lines in Assam and beyond.
