Former RBI Governor D Subbarao Reflects on Manmohan Singh's Listening Skills and Substance in Communication
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, known for his quiet demeanour and impactful words, has passed away. D Subbarao, who served as the Reserve Bank of India governor from 2008 to 2013, reflected on his interactions with Singh. Subbarao noted that Singh was an attentive listener who spoke sparingly but with great substance.

Rajiv Kumar, who once held the position of Vice Chairman at Niti Aayog, shared his experiences with Singh during his time as Finance Minister. Kumar appreciated Singh's openness to meeting economists even on short notice. He recalled how Singh encouraged him to accept a position at the Asian Development Bank in Manila, which significantly advanced his career.
Impact on India's Economic Landscape
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari expressed deep sorrow over Singh's demise. Gadkari highlighted Singh's crucial role in shaping India's economic path, describing him as a leader of humility and strength. He remembered engaging with Singh during his tenure as BJP President, noting the lasting impressions from their interactions.
Sarbananda Sonowal, another Union Minister, praised Singh for embodying humility and scholarship. Sonowal acknowledged Singh's significant contributions to India's economic resurgence during challenging times. He emphasised that Singh's policies were far-reaching and impactful on public life in India.
Personal Reflections and Tributes
Kumar mentioned that following Singh's advice to join ADB led to substantial benefits in his career progression. He admired Singh's approachability and kindness towards younger economists, which greatly influenced him. "He was so approachable and kind towards younger economists," Kumar stated.
Gadkari extended condolences to Singh's family and admirers, acknowledging the void left by his passing. "Om Shanti," he concluded in his tribute on social media platform X. Similarly, Sonowal offered condolences to Singh's family and well-wishers, wishing for eternal peace for his soul.
Singh's legacy remains significant in India's political and economic history. His leadership style and policies continue to be remembered and respected by many across the nation.
