Manmohan Singh Death: PM Modi, Leaders Across Party Lines Pay Tributes
Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, a revered economist and statesman, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92 after being admitted to the emergency department of AIIMS, Delhi. His demise marks the end of an era, and condolences poured in from across the political spectrum.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute, saying, "India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he became a respected economist and served in various government positions, including as Finance Minister, leaving a lasting imprint on India's economic policies. His interventions in Parliament were insightful, and as Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people's lives."
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his grief on X, saying, "Manmohan Singh Ji led India with immense wisdom and integrity. His humility and profound understanding of economics inspired the nation. My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Kaur and the family. I have lost a mentor and guide. Millions of us who admired him will remember him with great pride."
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra paid her respects, writing, "Few people in politics inspire the kind of respect that Sardar Manmohan Singh Ji did. His honesty will always serve as an inspiration. He will forever stand tall among those who truly love this country, as someone who remained steadfast in his commitment to serve despite facing unfair and deeply personal attacks from his opponents. He was genuinely egalitarian, wise, strong-willed, and courageous until the end- a uniquely dignified and gentle man in the rough world of politics."
JP Nadda expressed his condolences, stating, "The passing of Former Prime Minister and Economist Shri Manmohan Singh Ji is an immense loss for the nation. A visionary statesman and a stalwart of Indian politics, throughout his remarkable career in public service, he consistently advocated for the welfare of the downtrodden. His leadership earned admiration and respect across party lines. Shri Manmohan Singh Ji's legacy will continue to inspire generations in their pursuit of nation-building. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and admirers. Om Shanti."
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah wrote, "Very sorry to hear about the demise of former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh. I had many occasions to interact with him and learn from him. He was truly an intellectual giant, an accomplished economist, but above all, a thorough gentleman, a giant among pygmies. India has lost a great son with his passing. Rest in peace, sir, and thank you for everything."
Condoling the passing away of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday called him a statesman of unparalleled wisdom. He said Singh's legacy will continue to inspire generations.
"Deeply saddened by the passing of former Prime Minister Shri Manmohan Singh ji. A statesman of unparalleled wisdom, his leadership and vision left an indelible mark on our nation," Siddaramaiah posted on 'X'. "It was during his tenure as PM that I became the CM of Karnataka for the first time. His encouragement of our budgetary measures and the influence of landmark UPA policies like the Right to Food Act shaped Karnataka's progress and welfare initiatives. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones," he said.
Deputy CM D K Shivakumar condoled the death of Singh and said an era defined by statesmanship, integrity and quiet strength came to an end with his demise. Posting a picture of him with Singh on social media platform 'X', Shivakumar said his vision for the nation both as the PM and the economic architect during one of its most defining moments truly speaks volumes about his resilient leadership. "His passing away feels like a personal loss to me- not only was he an extraordinary leader, but he was an extraordinary human being as well! My deepest condolences to the family members and loved ones as we bid farewell to a true son of the soil," he added.
Former PM and JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda said Singh will be remembered in history as the man who changed the course of India's economic future. "Very sad to know the passing away of former Prime Minister, Shri Manmohan Singh. He was a good and patient man, a brilliant economist, and a colleague I valued and respected. He will be remembered in history as the man who changed the course of India's economic future. RIP," Gowda posted on 'X'.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raghav Chadha expressed his grief, calling Dr. Singh "a world-renowned economist and the architect behind the liberalization of the Indian economy." He added, "Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji steered India through difficult times into a new era. As Prime Minister, his quiet determination proved that intellect and integrity can drive transformative change. I join the nation in mourning his loss. His legacy will inspire generations to come. My deepest condolences to his family. Om Shanti."
AIIMS, Delhi, confirmed his passing in a statement, saying, "With profound grief, we inform the demise of Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had a sudden loss of consciousness at home on 26th December 2024. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM."
Dr. Singh's illustrious political career spanned decades. A member of the Rajya Sabha since 1991, he served as Leader of the Opposition from 1998 to 2004. He was sworn in as Prime Minister on May 22, 2004, following the general elections, and served a second term starting May 22, 2009.
His contributions to India's economic reforms, particularly the liberalization of 1991, and his leadership as Prime Minister remain a testament to his vision and dedication. The nation mourns the loss of a transformative leader whose legacy will endure.
