Manipur's Biren Singh Government To Hold Special Assembly Session In August

The Manipur government on Thursday made an announcement regarding the convening of a special assembly session in the second or third week of August. Sapam Rajan, the Government spokesperson and Information and Public Relations Minister, stated that efforts are being made towards this objective.

Various groups and individuals have been demanding a special assembly session to address the current situation in the state.

Additionally, Rajan refuted media reports that claimed the state government neglected the medical care of BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte, who was injured in an attack during the initial days of the ongoing ethnic strife in May. He clarified that the government took care of Valte and continually received updates on his health even after he was discharged from the hospital. The government also condemned the incident, and BJP state president Sarda Devi and minister Th Basanta visited Valte while he was hospitalized in Delhi.

The ethnic violence in Manipur began nearly three months ago and has resulted in the deaths of over 160 people, with hundreds injured. The violence erupted on May 3 following a 'Tribal Solidarity March' held in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The Meiteis, constituting about 53% of Manipur's population, predominantly reside in the Imphal Valley, while the tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, account for 40% and mainly live in the hill districts.
