Manipur Violence: Curfew Imposed, Internet Suspended For Next 5 Days

Mobile internet, broadband, and VPN services have been suspended for five days in Manipur due to a recent surge in violence. This decision follows an order from the state's Home department, which cited concerns about anti-social elements using social media to spread inflammatory content.

The order from the Home department states, "In view of the prevailing law and order situation in the State of Manipur, there is apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public, which might have serious repercussions for the law-and-order situation in the State of Manipur."

The directive also highlights potential dangers such as loss of life or damage to property due to false rumours and inflammatory material circulating on social media. The aim is to prevent disturbances to public tranquility and communal harmony by halting the spread of disinformation.

"There is an imminent danger of loss of life and/or damage to public/private property, and widespread disturbances to public tranquility and communal harmony, as a result of inflammatory material and false rumours, which might be transmitted/circulated to the public through social media/ messaging services on mobile services, SMS services and dongle services," it states.

To maintain peace and prevent any further violence, authorities have deemed it necessary to restrict internet access. The order specifically mentions platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and various electronic devices used for communication.

Curfew Imposed Amid Protests

Earlier on Tuesday, an indefinite curfew was imposed in both Imphal East and Imphal West districts. The curfew orders came into effect at 11 am due to the escalating law-and-order situation. Essential services and media personnel are exempt from these restrictions.

The Imphal West administration has restricted "the movement of any person(s) outside their respective residences" until further orders. This measure aims to control the situation and prevent further violence.

Since September 1, ethnic violence has claimed 11 lives in different incidents across the state. In response, students have organized large protests in valley areas like Thoubal and Imphal. These protests have often turned violent.

Violent Clashes with Police

At least 20 people were injured during clashes between protesters and police in Thoubal. The police resorted to using tear gas and stun grenades while protesters retaliated by throwing stones. In Imphal, students attempted to storm the official residences of Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

The Joint Secretary (Home), Government of Manipur stated in the order: "I hereby order temporary suspension/curbing of internet and mobile data services including Lease Lines, VSATs, Broadbands and VPN services in the territorial jurisdiction of the State of Manipur for five days."

This series of measures aims to restore peace by preventing misinformation from spreading through digital channels. The authorities hope these steps will help stabilize the region amidst ongoing tensions.
