Senior Police Officer Abduction Sparks Tension in Manipur, Army Deployed

A senior police officers abduction in Manipur led to heightened tensions, prompting the deployment of the Army and Assam Rifles. The abducted officer, Amit Kumar, was rescued and is receiving medical attention. The incident stemmed from the arrest of six individuals allegedly involved in vehicle theft, triggering protests and road blockades by a local womens group.

Amidst escalating tensions in Manipur, the Indian Army was called in on Tuesday, February 27, following the abduction of a senior police officer. Additional Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar, posted in the operations wing of the Manipur Police, was allegedly abducted by cadres of the Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei organization, from his residence in Imphal East.

Swift Rescue Operation

In a swift response, police and security forces launched a rescue operation, successfully securing Kumar's release within hours. The officer was admitted to a hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable.

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred around 7 pm on Tuesday when a group of Arambai Tenggol cadres attacked Kumar's house in Wangkhei, Imphal East. The motive behind the abduction is believed to be the officer's involvement in the arrest of six group members for their alleged involvement in vehicle theft.

Protest and Escalating Violence

Following the arrests, a group of Meira Paibis, a Meitei women's group, had protested and blocked roads, demanding the release of the arrested individuals. The situation further escalated on Tuesday evening when armed cadres belonging to the Arambai Tenggol ransacked Kumar's house and damaged several vehicles with gunfire.

Witness Account

M Kulla, the police officer's father, recounted the chaotic events, explaining that they attempted to communicate with the armed men but were met with sudden gunfire. The family was forced to rush inside and lock themselves for safety.

Army Deployment and AFSPA

Given the deteriorating situation, the state government sought assistance from the Army. Four columns of the Assam Rifles, a paramilitary force under the operational command of the Army, were deployed in the area where the incident took place. It's worth noting that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is not applicable in the valley areas of Manipur.

Escalating Violence in Manipur

The region has been grappling with escalating violence since May 3, 2023. Over 180 casualties have been reported after a Tribal Solidarity March in the hill districts protested the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The Meiteis, who constitute around 53% of Manipur's population and predominantly reside in the Imphal Valley, stand in contrast to the tribal communities, including Nagas and Kukis, who make up 40% and primarily inhabit the hill districts.

The abduction of a senior police officer and the subsequent deployment of the Army highlight the complex and volatile situation in Manipur. The ongoing conflict between the Meitei community and the tribal communities over ST status has resulted in escalating violence and poses significant challenges to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
