Mangalore University Hostel Students Demand Better Food Quality in Protest

Over 200 students from Mangalore University's hostel took a stand against the subpar quality of their meals by staging a protest on campus this Thursday. The demonstration saw students gathering in front of the Vice Chancellor's residence, where they displayed utensils filled with stale rice, symbolizing their dissatisfaction with the food being served. This act of protest highlights the ongoing issues faced by the students, including consistent complaints about meal quality and a perceived lack of action from the kitchen staff to address these concerns.

Students Protest for Better Food

Despite Vice Chancellor P L Dharma's absence from the campus due to commitments in Bengaluru, he responded to the situation by engaging with the protesting students via telephone. He assured them of prompt action against those responsible for the inadequate food quality. Nonetheless, the students escalated their demands, insisting on a direct visit from the Vice Chancellor to the protest site. The university registrar intervened, attempting to mediate between the two parties late into the night, yet the protest persisted.

In response to the unrest, university officials announced that a special committee comprising students, student leaders, hostel mates, university officials, and hostel wardens will conduct an on-site evaluation of the hostel facilities and food services. This initiative aims to address the grievances directly and ensure that the students' concerns are thoroughly investigated. Meanwhile, local law enforcement from Konaje police was called in to ensure that peace was maintained throughout the demonstration.

The situation at Mangalore University underscores a significant discontent among students regarding their living conditions, particularly the quality of food provided in the hostel. Despite ongoing discussions between students and university authorities, a resolution has yet to be reached, leaving tensions high on campus. The establishment of a special panel to investigate these issues marks a step towards addressing student grievances and improving their hostel experience.
