On Tuesday night police forced open the door of the apartment to find the dead-body of 67 year old Meera Bose. Her son Anirban Bose was locked up in the adjacent room.

When questioned he stated that he was locked up in the room without food and water and that his mother was in the other room. Post mortem reports claimed that Meera had been dead for more than 5 days.

The ordeal did not end here. Finding no relatives or friends to take care of Anirban, suffering from mental problems, the police left him behind locked doors in the same apartment.

With the intervention and pressure from the media, police on Wednesday returned to rescue Anirban and handed him over to Calcutta rescue, an NGO, with the consent of distant relatives.

Anirban is now under treatment at the Hope Foundation Hospital in Taratala, Kolkata. On Thursday medical tests were conducted on Anirban. He also underwent counseling sessions.

Though showing signs of schizophrenia and suffering from mild memory loss, Anirban who is docile in nature, could remember details like his name, father's name, his family.

"He is responding to treatment" stated Samiran Mullick, the CEO of the Hospital talking to media persons.

Anirban even divulged that he had undergone a spinal cord surgery in Assam while working in a tea company there. Following the surgery his health had deteriorated and he had quit the job.

Anirban has had a sound educational background and had studied in reputed educational institutions. However since Anirban's father's death in 1997 the family plunged into abject poverty.

His father was a free lance photo journalist. Such was the condition that the apartment in which Anirban used to live with his mother had no electricity owing to nonpayment of bills.

Anirban was given a haircut, shave and a bath on followed by a hearty lunch on Thursday, the first in many months.
