Machilipatnam (AP), Aug 23: A 40-year-old man allegedly tried to commit suicide on Saturday, Aug 22 at Pamarru area in Krishna district over Centre's delay in according special status to Andhra Pradesh.
Chavali Subba Rao, who works as an electrician, attempted suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his residence, Pamarru Circle Inspector K Dharmendra said.
"However, when his wife and mother noticed it, they prevented him from doing so with the help of their neighbours. He was immediately taken to a private hospital in Vijayawada," he said.
"The doctors at the hospital found a suicide note in his pocket, in which he had mentioned that he was taking the extreme step in protest against the Union Government's delay in granting special status to Andhra Pradesh," Dharmendra added.
A case has been registered in this regard, police said, adding that his condition is now stable.
When Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu learnt about the incident, he paid a visit to the hospital and also appealed to the people to refrain from taking such extreme steps.
Meanwhile, AP Congress committee chief N Raghuveera Reddy expressed shock over the incident and demanded the Centre to accord special status to the state as soon as possible.
