Police Investigate Suspected Suicide Pact Involving Man and His Four Daughters in Delhi
The decomposed bodies of a 46-year-old man and his four daughters were discovered in their rented home in Vasant Kunj, southwest Delhi. Police suspect that Heera Lal Sharma, a carpenter at the Indian Spinal Injury Centre for 28 years, and his daughters Neetu, Nikki, Neeru, and Nidhi may have entered into a suicide pact. The family resided on the third floor of a four-storey building in Rangpuri village.

Upon entering the flat, police found no injury marks on the bodies but discovered three packets of Celphos poison, five glasses, and a spoon with a suspicious liquid. This led investigators to suspect suicide as no foul play evidence was found. The family had become reclusive after Sharma's wife passed away in August last year, facing emotional and financial difficulties.
Neighbours' Observations and Police Investigation
Neighbours reported that they last saw Sharma and his daughters on September 24. CCTV footage from that day shows Sharma entering the house. A foul smell from flat number C4 prompted neighbours to alert authorities. Building owner Nitin Chauhan was informed by the caretaker about the odour. After receiving no response at the door, police broke it open with fire brigade assistance.
Inside, they found Sharma deceased in one room and his daughters in another. Deputy Commissioner of Police Southwest Rohit Meena stated that while police confirmed two daughters were differently-abled, neighbours claimed all four were physically challenged. This claim is under verification.
Family Background and Community Insights
Sharma's brother Mohan and sister-in-law Gudiya arrived after being notified of the incident. They mentioned Sharma's depression following his wife's death and his focus on his daughters' care. Gudiya recalled discussing marriage for Sharma's eldest daughter months ago, but she declined due to her mother's recent passing.
Amarjeet Singh, a neighbour, noted Sharma's reserved nature and said many were unaware he had four daughters. His youngest daughter was occasionally seen outside, but the others rarely left home. Singh also observed Sharma doing household chores like washing clothes for his daughters.
Legal Proceedings and Community Reactions
Inquest proceedings under section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) have begun. A medical board will conduct post-mortem examinations on Monday. The family’s struggles highlight the need for community support systems for those facing similar challenges.
The tragic incident underscores the importance of mental health awareness and support within communities. It serves as a reminder to stay connected with neighbours and offer help when needed.
