Man allegedly keeps wife and minor daughter locked up for 5 years

However the mother- daughter incident is shrouded in mystery. The incident occurred in the Jalangi area of Murshidabad around 200 km from Kolkata.

Police rescued the 36 year old and her 11 year daughter from a locked room in a house. They were allegedly locked in the room by the husband of the woman for around 5 years.

According to Nikhil Sarkar who lodged a complaint at the Jalangi police station claimed that his sister Manju and her daughter had been locked up by Manabendra Mondal, a carpenter by profession.

Police accompanied Sarkar and rescued the Manju and her daughter from a locked room inside the house. Even the windows of the house were covered with black plastic sheets to bar prying eyes.

"Based on the complaint police have started investigation. Manabendra is missing" stated Debasish Sarkar, Officer in Charge, Jalangi Police Station.
The most baffling part of the incident is that Manju did not complain about her husband. The woman who is a graduate instead preferred to remain in the dingy room claiming that they were happy and had no problems.

She had to be coaxed to come out of the room and visit the police station. It was evident that they were having problems in the daylight and with the crowd.
After the formalities were over the duo returned to their residence. Neighbours claim that they had not seen the mother and the daughter for the past 5 years. The 11 year old had stopped going to school after Class 1.
Manabendra used to leave home in the morning after locking the door and used to return late at night.
Sarkar alleged that Manabendra had remarried and that his second wife was also staying in the same house hence Manabendra used to keep his first wife and daughter locked up in a room.

Sarkar further alleged that he had last spoken to his sister nearly 5 year ago over the phone. "When I had visited her recently a voice from inside the house pretending to be my sister asked me to leave immediately and threatened to commit suicide if I didn't leave. I was compelled to leave" added Sarkar.
Sarkar claimed that the "voice" was none other than Manabendra's second wife.

In another incident on October 25, 96 year old Sabita Nath was allegedly locked up in a room by her elder son Vikash, a bank employee, before leaving for a vacation to Andaman. The incident occurred at Anandapur, Kolkata. The 96 year old was without food for 3 days. Later she was rescued by her daughter Jayashree Kayal who had gone to visit her on Sunday. Kayal lodged a police complaint.
