New Delhi, Nov 13: Former Indian actress Mamta Kulkarni who acted in many superhit films during 90s and her husband Vicky Goswami have been arrested in Kenya.

According to reports, they have been detained by Kenya police on the charges of drug trafficking in Kenya. The couple was taken into custody on Sunday last week and is being interrogated by the Kenya police.

Both Mamata and her husband are being quizzed by the police for their alleged involvement in the case. If Mamta is found guilty then she might be deported to India and Vicky might be deported to the US.

Mamta's husband, Goswani had earlier been imprisoned in Dubai for drug-related offences, but was later released on the grounds of good conduct.

Vicky Goswani was jailed in 1997 for trafficking about 11.5 tonne of Mandrax and was sentenced to 25 years of life imprisonment. In 2012, Mamta had married 52-year-old Vicky while he was serving his sentence in a Dubai jail. Both Mamta and Vicky later moved to Nairobi where Mamata was leading her husband's business.

As per reports, Mamta converted to Islam after getting married to Goswami and shifted to Nairobi with him. Before this Mamata lead an anonymous life in Dubai for sometime.

Mamata was always on-and-off the headlines after she suddenly vanished from the film industry. She also came to limelight for turning into a spiritual devotee.

When Kulkarni was asked about her reason to leave Bollywood industry by an entertainment website, she was quoted as saying, "Some are born for cause of world ... some are born as cause for God, I fall for latter part. So, the call to go to my actual cause of my existence was inevitable (sic)."

Mamata soared to fame with Bollywood hits like Aashiq Awara, Waqt Hamara Hai, Krantiveer, Karan Arjun, Sabse Bada Khiladi , Baazi, China Gate, Ghatak: Lethal among many other hit movies. During her career in the film industry, she had shared screen with Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar.

Kulkarni had also courted controversy in 1993 when she posed topless on the cover page of Stardust magazine, following which she was charged under India's many obscenity laws, and found herself under attack from both conservative religious groups, and women's groups.

After working in Bollywood for almost 11 years, Mamta took retirement from showbiz.
