Mamata Mohanta's Defection to BJP Stirs Speculation in BJD Circles
Senior BJD leader Mamata Mohanta has joined the BJP after resigning from her Rajya Sabha position. This move has prompted the Congress to assert that the BJP's true stance towards regional parties is now evident. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh remarked that BJD chief Naveen Patnaik might be contemplating who will be next to leave.

Ramesh highlighted that for over two decades, the BJD and BJP appeared as rivals but were actually supporting each other. He noted that Patnaik had even facilitated BJP leader Ashwini Vaishnaw's election to the Rajya Sabha twice. "Now the true face of the BJP vis-a-vis regional parties has been revealed," Ramesh stated.
BJP Gains a Rajya Sabha Seat
Mohanta's resignation and subsequent joining of the BJP means her Rajya Sabha seat will now go to the BJP. "Poor Naveen-babu must be wondering who will be next," Ramesh added. This development reduces the BJD's strength in the Rajya Sabha to eight members, with no representation in the Lok Sabha.
On Thursday, Mohanta officially joined the BJP at its headquarters. The event was attended by senior party leaders, including national secretary Arun Singh and Odisha in-charge Vijay Pal Singh. Several BJP MPs from Odisha were also present during the occasion.
Impact on BJD's Representation
The BJD now holds eight out of ten Rajya Sabha seats allocated to Odisha. This shift in political allegiance highlights ongoing changes within regional party dynamics and their relationships with national parties like the BJP.
The Congress's comments reflect a broader concern about the BJP's strategy towards regional parties. By securing Mohanta's resignation and subsequent membership, the BJP has demonstrated its influence over regional political figures.
This incident underscores the complex interplay between national and regional politics in India. The realignment of political loyalties can significantly impact party strengths in legislative bodies, influencing policy and governance.
The developments surrounding Mamata Mohanta’s switch to the BJP are a significant indicator of shifting political alliances in Odisha. The Congress's reaction underscores concerns about how these changes might affect future political landscapes.
