Mamata Banerjee Reveals Cautious Strategy for West Bengal Elections

Lok Sabha Election 2024: The Election Commission of India has announced to conduct polling in West Bengal in four phases. Out of the 42 seats, only 18 have seen voting, so far. Elections for the remaining 24 seats are yet to be held in the next three phases.

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee recently made the headlines for her statement that she will lead the opposition INDIA bloc in West Bengal, adding that she will extend her support from outside.

Her statement sparked several questions and debates about her strategy for the crucial election.

Mamata is taking a cautious approach to the elections. She says she will form a government in Delhi that will not cause problems for Bengal. Yet, she announces beforehand that she will not be part of that government herself. Experts believe Mamata is taking calculated steps.

She has distanced herself from Congress and the Left in the state. She wants to keep the anti-BJP vote bank with her at any cost. She tells voters not to get caught up with the Left and Congress in Bengal. In Delhi, she talks about leading the India bloc and supporting it from outside.

Mamata knows that if the anti-BJP vote goes to Congress and the Left, her political ground could slip away. The pro-Modi vote in Bengal is not going to change. She wants to warn anti-Modi voters that TMC is the only option to stop BJP in the state.

Out of the 18 seats where elections have been held so far, almost half are in North Bengal, a BJP stronghold. Now, the election is shifting towards Kolkata and South Bengal. In 2019, the winning and losing margin in 18 seats was between 0.1% and 8.5%.

The two seats that Congress won last time were low-margin seats. Out of the remaining 16, BJP and TMC won 8 each. Mamata knows BJP is aggressive on issues like corruption, sand mining, and law and order. If even a small percentage of floating voters change sides, it could turn the tide.

Mamata has been working on this strategy since the beginning of the elections. She decided to contest alone in the state, separate from the India bloc, accusing the Left and Congress of working for BJP.

The Congress high command is aware of Mamata's strategy but does not want to anger her or cannot afford to do so. Four phases of elections have passed, but Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have not visited for an election rally. The party has left Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for a kind of "noora kushti," whom Mamata hardly takes seriously.
