Mamata Banerjee's Republic Day Row: Why Was Kolkata Police Band Denied Entry?
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed strong dissatisfaction after discovering that the Kolkata Police band was initially denied entry to the Republic Day celebrations at Raj Bhavan. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, highlighted a breach in tradition and sparked a swift reaction from the Chief Minister, who took it upon herself to ensure justice was served, as reported by India Today.

Mamata Banerjee's Republic Day Row: A Tradition Interrupted
As Banerjee arrived at Raj Bhavan to attend the Republic Day event, she was informed that the Kolkata Police band, which has traditionally performed at the celebration, was stopped at the gate. Instead, two bands from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) were performing inside the Governor's House. Learning this, the visibly upset Chief Minister decided to intervene.
Walking straight to the gate, Banerjee engaged with Raj Bhavan officials and demanded that the Kolkata Police band be granted entry. She emphasized that the exclusion was unwarranted, especially given the band's customary role in the event.
Speaking to the media, Banerjee said, "Every year, the Kolkata Police band performs at this event. Why were they not allowed inside this time? Very bad." She clarified that she had no objections to the SSB bands performing but found it unacceptable to sideline the Kolkata Police band, which has been an integral part of the celebrations for years, as reported by India Today.
Firm Stance Leads to Resolution
Banerjee refused to enter Raj Bhavan until the matter was resolved. Her unwavering stand led to swift action by Raj Bhavan officials, who permitted the Kolkata Police band to enter and perform. Following the resolution, Banerjee attended the event as planned.
Preserving Traditions and Respect
This incident highlighted the importance of preserving traditions and respecting institutions that play a crucial role in ceremonial events. Banerjee's intervention not only ensured the band's participation but also underscored the significance of honoring customs associated with Republic Day celebrations.
The Chief Minister's actions received mixed reactions, with her supporters praising her for standing up for the Kolkata Police band. The swift resolution demonstrated how quick action and leadership could address perceived injustices effectively, as per media reports.
As the Republic Day event concluded, the inclusion of the Kolkata Police band stood as a testament to the importance of respecting traditions and ensuring that no group is left out of such significant occasions.
