Mamata Banerjee Shoots Second Letter To PM Modi On Rape Cases: 'No reply From Your End'

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written a second letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing concern over the lack of response to her previous appeal for stronger legislation on rape and murder.

This comes in the wake of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, which has sparked widespread outrage.

In her latest letter, which she posted on her X handle, Banerjee urged the central government to introduce stringent laws to address the rising cases of sexual violence in the country.

She expressed disappointment over the response she received from the Minister of Women and Child Development, stating, "No reply was received from your end on such a sensitive issue. However, a reply has been received from the Minister of Women and Child Development, Government of India, which barely attends the gravity of the issue raised in my letter."

Banerjee further said her dissatisfaction with the response, adding, "I am of the thought that the seriousness of the subject and its relevance to the society have not been adequately appreciated while sending out this generic reply."

The Chief Minister first reached out to the Prime Minister last week, calling for the creation of a "stringent central legislation" aimed at curbing the growing number of rape cases. She also advocated for the establishment of fast-track special courts to ensure speedy trials and deliver swift justice to victims.

In her initial letter, Banerjee underscored the responsibility of lawmakers to combat the scourge of rape and murder, stating, "It is our bounden duty to put an end to it so that women feel safe and secure. Such a serious and sensitive issue needs to be addressed in a comprehensive manner through stringent central legislation prescribing exemplary punishment against the persons involved in such dastardly crimes."
