Students' Victory: Mamata finally acts, Jadavpur University VC likely to resign
Kolkata, Jan 12: Protesting students at Jadavpur University finally received a good news. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself assured them that the Vice Chancellor (VC) will resign accepting demand of the students.
The West Bengal CM on Monday, Jan 12 entered Jadavpur University in the evening and met students and the Vice Chancellor (VC) Abhijit Chatterjee. After their meeting, the CM claimed that the VC will resign from his post.
Students of the university were on hunger strike since last one week. Many of the protesters have fallen ill. Mamata and the state government were under tremendous pressure as the students threatened to continue their stir demanding VC's resignation.
Students of the university had begun their protest against violence inside the campus in Sept 2014. A young student of the university was sexually harassed on Aug 28.
Later a group of students started protesting inside the university campus demanding justice for the victim. Despite listening to the demand of the students, the VC called police on Sept 16.
The cops lathicharged and attacked the protesting students to disburse the crowd. VC's decision of calling police inside the campus enraged students and they demanded his resignation.
This time the protest took an ugly turn and Mamata Banerjee was pressurised to take an action. Earlier Education Minister Partha Chatterjee too met the students and the VC. Despite the CM's assurance, the VC is yet to make any statement on his decision of resignation.
