Mallikarjun Kharge Upgraded To Z Plus Security Amid Central Intelligence Agency Threat Report

After a threat perception report from Central intelligence agencies, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is set to receive Z plus security cover.

The security will be provided by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), according to sources familiar with the matter.

Kharge Upgraded To Z Plus Security

Z plus security is considered the highest level of protection provided by the government to individuals facing significant threats to their lives, following the Special Protection Group (SPG) cover. This security detail includes a team of 55 personnel, including CRPF commandoes who will guard Kharge round the clock. Additionally, it encompasses a bulletproof vehicle and escort provided in three shifts.

Kharge's elevation to Z plus security follows a thorough threat analysis conducted by the Intelligence Bureau, which categorizes VIP security into four levels: Z plus, Z, Y, and X, based on the perceived threat level.

Notably, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also holds Z plus protection. Previously, until 2019, the Gandhi family enjoyed SPG security cover, which was subsequently downgraded to Z plus. The SPG, or Special Protection Group, is a specialized force tasked with safeguarding the Prime Minister, former Prime Ministers, and their immediate family members.

Established in the aftermath of the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984, the SPG comprises a 3,000-personnel force dedicated to providing high-level security. In light of these developments, Kharge's enhanced security measures come amidst ongoing political dynamics within the Congress party.

Recently, Kharge commented on the defection of some Congress leaders to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), attributing it to fears of an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and pressure from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He expressed concerns over individuals who had benefited from the Congress party seeking refuge in the BJP, highlighting the importance of staying committed to one's principles and values. The decision to provide Z plus security to Mallikarjun Kharge underscores the government's commitment to ensuring the safety and security of prominent political figures amidst evolving security challenges and political transitions.
