Make Vande Mataram compulsory in schools: SC petitioned
The petition has been admitted and has been sent to Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi for his opinion on the matter
A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking to make Vande Mataram compulsory in all schools. The Supreme Court, while admitting the petition has asked Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi to give his opinion on the matter.
The National Song penned by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee has become a subject matter of debate when a Kerala minister had said it was not compulsory. The Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh and the Bharatiya Janata Party had urged that singing the song be made mandatory for schoolchildren.

A controversy had erupted in Bihar over this issue when students of a school in Gopalganj district belonging to the minority community had opposed singing the song during prayers. Some members of the management committee of the school supported the stand taken by the students, after which the school authorities relented.
