Pre-marital test for impotency, STD to be mandatory in India? Law to come soon?

Marriage
Chennai, Aug 28: Madras High Court might create a history in India as it has suggested the government to make a law under which pre-marital test for impotency and Sexual-transmitted Disease (STD) would be mandatory in the country.

It would be mandatory for all brides and grooms to undergo medical tests to ensure that they are not impotent or frigid, said the court on Wednesday, Aug 27 while suggesting the government to make the law.

Justice N Kirubakaran claimed that such move would bring down divorce petitions drastically on account of impotence, which the court felt was on the rise.

The judge was quoted as saying, "If pre-marital clinical examinations by doctors are done, it will prevent not only impotents getting married, but (also) prevent marriages of people suffering from dangerous and incurable diseases. Governments should give first preference to tackling this kind of human problems."

The judge gave his suggestion while hearing a petition filed by a husband challenging the proceedings initiated by his wife under the Domestic Violence Act.
