Mahim Assembly Seat to Witness Intense Competition Among Three Senas on November 20

The Mahim assembly seat in Mumbai is set for an intense electoral battle on 20 November. Three factions of the Sena will compete: the ruling Shiv Sena, the opposition Shiv Sena UBT, and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) led by Raj Thackeray. This seat holds historical significance as it witnessed the formation of the undivided Shiv Sena in 1966 and later the MNS in 2006.

Three Senas Compete for Mahim Assembly Seat

Mahim's political landscape is diverse, with a mix of upper-class Maharashtrians and a significant cosmopolitan and minority presence. The area houses headquarters for both the Shiv Sena UBT and MNS. Iconic locations like Shivaji Park in nearby Dadar serve as venues for annual rallies by both parties.

Key Candidates and Historical Context

Amit Thackeray, son of Raj Thackeray, is making his electoral debut from Mahim, one of Mumbai's 36 assembly segments. The Shiv Sena has nominated sitting MLA Sada Sarvankar, while Mahesh Sawant represents the Shiv Sena UBT. Sanjay Raut from Shiv Sena UBT stated that their party must contest here due to its historical roots in the Mahim-Dadar region.

The constituency has been under either the undivided Shiv Sena or MNS since 1990. In 2009, Nitin Sardesai from MNS secured victory from Mahim. The upcoming elections for Maharashtra's 288-member state assembly will take place on 20 November, with vote counting scheduled three days later.

Political Dynamics and Party Headquarters

Shiv Sena's split in June 2022 saw Eknath Shinde lead a faction against then-Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. This division adds complexity to the current political scenario. The Shiv Sena UBT headquarters remains in Mahim, reflecting its continued influence despite internal challenges.

Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray are cousins, adding a personal dimension to their political rivalry. Both parties utilise Shivaji Park for significant events like Padwa and Dussehra rallies, highlighting their cultural and political engagement with local communities.

The Mahim seat's importance is underscored by its historical ties to major political movements within Maharashtra. As election day approaches, all eyes are on this central Mumbai constituency to see which faction will emerge victorious in this high-stakes contest.
