Maharashtra’s Swing Seats That Could Decide The 2024 Assembly Elections
As Maharashtra heads into the November 2024 assembly elections, the state's coastal and urban belts, including Mumbai, have emerged as crucial battlegrounds that could determine the outcome of the election. These 75 constituencies, spread across the bustling metropolis of Mumbai and the scenic Konkan coastline, hold the key to power for the two major alliances-Mahayuti and the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
In a political landscape shaped by rapid urbanisation, demographic shifts, and factional rivalries, both alliances are raring to wrest control of these critical seats.

The Political Landscape: Rival Shiv Senas and Regional Heavyweights
The coastal and urban regions are not just rich in electoral significance but are also emblematic of the broader shifts in Maharashtra's politics. The Mahayuti alliance, composed of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction and Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), faces off against the MVA, which includes the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), Congress and Sharad Pawar's NCP faction.
What makes this contest particularly intriguing is the rivalry between the two Shiv Sena factions, which will play out in some of the most high-profile constituencies. In Mumbai's Worli constituency, Uddhav Thackeray's son Aaditya Thackeray is seeking re-election, while Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is fighting to retain his stronghold in Thane City. These contests are more than just local battles; they symbolise the broader struggle for the legacy of the late Bal Thackeray and the soul of the Shiv Sena.
Former Union Minister Narayan Rane, now aligned with the BJP, is another pivotal figure in the coastal belt. His influence in the Konkan region, particularly in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, could tilt the balance in favor of the Mahayuti alliance. Rane's Lok Sabha victory in 2024 from the Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg seat has cemented his role as a key player for the BJP in the coastal belt.
Urban Powerhouses: The Stakes in Mumbai and Thane
The urbanised and industrialised Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is the epicenter of Maharashtra's electoral landscape, sending 36 legislators to the assembly and playing a critical role in shaping the state's politics. The stakes are particularly high here, as housing, infrastructure and urban poverty dominate the political discourse. Mumbai's complex and growing urban challenges, exacerbated by rapid population growth, make it a crucial electoral territory for both alliances.
In the last assembly elections in 2019, the Shiv Sena, then undivided, dominated Mumbai. However, with the split in the party, the upcoming election has become unpredictable. The Congress, which was once a significant force in Mumbai, has seen its influence wane over the years. In contrast, the Shiv Sena (UBT) has gained ground within the MVA alliance, while the BJP is aiming to recover from a drop in its seat tally in the 2019 election.
In the wider Thane district, which includes 18 assembly constituencies, the contest between the two Shiv Sena factions will also be critical. Eknath Shinde's faction is expected to hold sway, but the Uddhav-led Sena is fighting hard to regain lost ground.
The Konkan Factor: A Hotly Contested Coastal Belt
The coastal Konkan division, which stretches from Sindhudurg to Mumbai, encompasses key districts like Raigad, Ratnagiri and Palghar. These districts account for 15 assembly constituencies, and the region is poised to play a pivotal role in determining the political future of Maharashtra. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Mahayuti alliance performed strongly in this region, winning seven seats, with the BJP triumphing in Palghar and Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg.
However, the NCP, led by Ajit Pawar, held on to Raigad through its leader Sunil Tatkare. This sets the stage for a fiercely contested battle in the assembly elections, where the NCP will try to build on its Lok Sabha performance.
In Palghar, a tribal-dominated district, the BJP is focusing on consolidating its position. The district's six assembly seats are critical, given the changing political dynamics and the rise of local issues, including tribal rights and land development, which could sway voters in unexpected ways.
The Road Ahead: Mahayuti vs MVA
The upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra are seen as a litmus test for both the Mahayuti and MVA alliances. The Mahayuti alliance, which secured a strong showing in the recent Lok Sabha polls, is under pressure to maintain its momentum and expand its hold over the assembly. For the BJP, which saw its Lok Sabha tally drop significantly from 23 seats in 2019 to just nine in 2024, the assembly elections are critical for reclaiming its dominance in the state.
On the other hand, the MVA, particularly the Congress, is looking to regain lost ground. Buoyed by its improved performance in the Lok Sabha polls, the Congress is aiming to consolidate its position within the alliance and increase its seat tally in the assembly.
The Bottom Line: A Swing Region in the Balance
As the election date approaches, Maharashtra's coastal and urban belts will be the key battlegrounds that could swing the overall outcome of the assembly elections. With 75 seats up for grabs, the contests in Mumbai, Thane, and the Konkan region will be fiercely fought. And for the commercial capital of India, Mumbai, this is going to be one election that will be remembered for long as there are several projects awaiting completion, promising to make the city one of the best in the world.
