Maharashtra to have motorcycle cabs now?

Mumbai, June 17: Sources in the state transport commissioner's office have said that the organization is planning to launch motorcycle cabs that can be of great help on a bad-traffic day. The draft for the scheme has been sent to the state government for consideration. Following this, the state transport authority will be meeting in May to work on the proposal.

The motorcycle cabs in the city will have fare meters, unlike the black-and-yellow 'pilot cabs' in Goa. An official said,"The state government wanted to introduce black-and-yellow bikes like taxis and autorickshaws. These bikes will have a fare meter too."

The bikes are likely to have variety too. Ranging from a capacity of 100 cc to 350 cc, customers can now choose from normal city bikes to thunderbirds to travel.

The registration of these bikes would be under the transport category. According to RTO sources, the bike riders will be provided with badges, which they have to spot (like the ones given to cabbies and auto drivers).

Moreover, the two-wheeler would also have a permanent license. The transport department has also cited many safety measures in the motocycle including a saree guard, crash guard on the front, a break and side lights.

The transport department, however, is tight-lipped about any such launches.
