Maharashtra Embraces Old Pension Scheme: Positive Stance and Information Gathering

Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar reveals the state governments positive stance on the old pension scheme, seeking information from other states that have reinstated it. The OPS provides government employees with a monthly pension equivalent to 50% of their last drawn salary.

Maharashtras Shift: Embracing the Old Pension Scheme

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar announced on Tuesday that the state government is positive about the old pension scheme (OPS) and has sought information from other state governments that have decided to revert to it. Pawar, who previously opposed the OPS, has changed his stance on the matter.

Committee Report Submitted

Pawar informed the legislative council that a committee led by Subodh Kumar, K P Bakshi, and Sudhir Shrivastava has submitted a report to the state government regarding the OPS. The committee was formed to study the feasibility of implementing the OPS in Maharashtra.

Government Employees' Demand

Several government and semi-government employees in Maharashtra have been demanding the restoration of the OPS, which was discontinued in the state in 2005. Under the OPS, a government employee receives a monthly pension equivalent to 50% of their last drawn salary without any employee contribution.

New Pension Scheme

The New Pension Scheme (NPS), introduced in 2005, requires state government employees to contribute 10% of their basic salary plus dearness allowance, with the state making a matching contribution. The funds are invested in pension funds approved by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), and the returns are market-linked.

Central Government's Role

Pawar revealed that the central government is actively considering addressing the issue of the OPS, recognizing its potential financial benefits for individuals. He mentioned that the eligible people will receive financial benefits from the year 2021.

Change in Stand

When asked if the change in stance on the OPS was influenced by the BJP's setback in the recent Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) polls, Pawar acknowledged that it was a key factor. He emphasized that if a decision is causing harm to people, politicians should refrain from implementing it.

Balancing Act

Pawar stated that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, and himself have had preliminary discussions on the OPS. They aim to strike a balance between salaries, pension amounts, and the burden on the state's finances.

Changing Family Dynamics

Pawar expressed concern about the changing dynamics of families, where the younger generation often neglects the care of their elderly parents. He advised parents to make financial arrangements for their post-retirement life, as children may not always be reliable caregivers.

Personal Anecdote

When asked why he was not taking care of his 83-year-old uncle, NCP president Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar used the situation to reinforce his point. He stated that he advises his uncle to rest, but he refuses to listen.

The Maharashtra government's positive stance on the old pension scheme is a significant development that could potentially benefit a large number of government employees in the state. As the central government also considers addressing the issue, it remains to be seen how the OPS will be implemented and what impact it will have on the financial well-being of retirees.
